The transition from WWE wrestler to legitimate Hollywood actor isn’t always easy but, damn, Dave Bautista is doing it smoothly.
Deadline reports that Bautista, known as Drax the Destroyer to many, is gearing up to star in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead for Netflix. And, no, Army has nothing to do with Justice League or Batman or Superman so you are officially able to be excited about it. Instead, the film is about a man who compiles a team to pull of the ultimate heist in Las Vegas during a zombie apocalypse. So instead of running away from the end of the world, Bautista will be running into it. Well, when you’ve got muscles like he does I guess a few million zombies isn’t as scary.
The movie will be Snyder’s first directorial effort since the much-maligned Justice League. Despite what many say, Snyder is a talented filmmaker. He just got bogged down in the DC cinematic universe. Now that he’s free of capes and superheroes, I hope Snyder is able to show off his skills again. His prior films weren’t all amazing (Sucker Punch was...well, let’s move along) but the man knew how to put together a tight action movie. In fact his first feature, the Dawn of the Dead remake, is a stone-cold classic and one of the best remakes ever. And, hey, it is also about zombies so that gives me more hope for Army of the Dead.
Bautista, on the other hand, has been having a wonderful time lately. The man officially retired from the WWE but his movie career is alive and well. He will of course co-star in Avengers: Endgame as well as the next Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s also leading the comedy Stuber with Kumail Nanjiani and is in the Dune adaptation and is leading a family comedy My Spy. So, yeah, he’s doing just fine for himself. And I’d tell him that straight to his face because it’s the truth, not because I’m afraid he could crush me like a grape.
But he could.
