Just Bulldoze the Damn House: A New 'Amityville' Is in the Works

Some things just never go out of style: Black Friday sales, Third Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Life” and movies based on Jay Anson’s classic novel, The Amityville Horror. Today brings us news on the latest adaptation of Anson’s seminal work. But don’t worry, you can fire up Third Eye Blind on Spotify while you read.

Deadline is reporting that the Wonderfilm Media Corporation has greenlit Amityville 1974, a film that’ll serve as a prequel to the original Amityville Horror and all of its subsequent spin-offs and sequels. Wonderfilm’s movie will focus on the original murders that allegedly led to the haunting of the notorious Long Island house. In 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed his entire family in the house that would later be occupied by the unfortunate Lutz family, who claimed they were haunted for 28 days before they beat feet and sold the house. The DeFeo murders were horrid and bone-chilling and could make for a truly scary flick.

There have been something like 20-plus spin-offs and sequels since the original Amityville Horror back in 1979 but nothing has been as successful as the original. This Amityville 1974 seems like a good way to revitalize the series and also do something a bit different. This time the story won’t just be about the haunted house but what caused the house to be haunted. And it’s quite the story! Let me tell you, Anson’s book delivered some grizzly details about the DeFeo murders. The story will give you goosebumps even if you don’t believe that it caused the house to be haunted. If the movie is half as scary as the actual events then we are all in for a gory, frightening treat.

This should serve as a reminder that Anson’s novel is a fantastic piece of horror writing. I read it back in junior high school and was enthralled and terrified. I have vivid memories of reading the book after lunch at school and being far too afraid to read it when I got home. It would sit in my backpack all night because even a glimpse of the cover would remind me of all the terrifying contents inside. The book forever ruined New York, real estate and red-eyed pigs for me.
