‘The Batman’ Gets One Hell of a Cinematographer

Everyone should be quite happy with the team being assembled for The Batman. Matt Reeves directing, Robert Pattinson starring. So far, so good. And as production gets closer and closer, the team will fill out even more. Today we received news of who will be the movie’s cinematographer and it’s another smart, exciting choice.

Reeves has tapped Greig Fraser to shoot the comic book film. Fraser is best known for his work on Rogue One, Vice, Zero Dark Thirty and Lion (for which he received an Oscar nomination). That’s a track record anyone should be proud of.

Fraser told THR: “It’s great to be working with Matt again. The Batman franchise is iconic and it's a privilege to now be able to visualize it in my own way. Especially with the cumulative creative potential of all the talent and technicians we have in front of and behind the camera."

Fraser’s selection is more proof that Reeves’s film will maintain the realistic feel of Nolan’s Batman films. Fraser’s work has had a very grounded look to it, even his work on Rogue One. I’m particularly very fond of his vision on Zero Dark Thirty, a movie that looked brilliant no matter where the story took it: Washington, the Middle-East, Pakistan in the dead of night. I can’t wait to see what his talent brings to The Batman.

Some may scoff at Reeves’s choice of Fraser because they’re tired of “gritty” Batman movies but that’s where the character is at now — and where he may always be. I doubt you’re going to get a light-hearted Batman movie ever again. Personally I think that the current cinematic take on Batman is a very authentic and faithful personification of the character but maybe I’m just a rabid fanboy at heart.

When you look at Fraser and Reeves’s previous work, you can start to visualize what The Batman will look and feel like. I’m growing more and more excited to see where Reeves leads the character. Now let’s just hope we get more casting news soon. I’m dying to know if Oscar Isaac is supposedly still in talks for a role.
