‘American Horror Story: 1984’ Trailer: Beware of Camp Redwood

What you have above is the first teaser for FX’s newest season of American Horror Story. This season is titled American Horror Story: 1984 and the trailer proves why: the show is definitely going retro this time and will be heavily influenced by teen slasher films of the 80s. Just watching this trailer gives me serious Friday the 13th vibes and that’s obviously very intentional. I can practically hear the Jason theme music in my head.

Ryan Murphy’s show has always been one to embrace and lean into homage and camp. This season of the show will allow that in spades, this is a genre that Murphy and his team can sink their teeth into. FX has given producers free reign so they’ll be able to indulge in all the violence, sex and naughty language that they’ll want. This show is a hard TV-MA and it’ll surely take full advantage of that with 1984.

This is uncharted territory for the show after all these years. They’ve never done anything quite like this. AHS has mostly stuck to supernatural and psychological horror in the past so a teen slasher is breaking new ground. That’s exciting, especially for a series that has been on the air for so long. Some viewers have claimed the show has been in a rut lately and I can understand that. How many seasons about witches, wizards and ghosts can you have? Why not change it up and create a season about a murderer terrorizing young kids at a lake? Perhaps 1984 will breathe new life into the show. Even if it doesn’t, at least it’ll be fun to watch.

Will fans enjoy American Horror Story: 1984 even though it’ll be missing AHS mainstays Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters? We’ll find out in a few months when the show premieres on September 18th.
