Below we have a new trailer for Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit, a coming-of-age comedy about a young German boy whose imaginary friend just happens to be Adolf Hitler. Have fun with the marketing for this one, Fox Searchlight!

This seems absolutely wonderful. It looks heart-warming and truly funny. And while I understand that some are afraid of the controversy that could surround this film, I can’t imagine people misinterpreting the intent and view of this film, it seems to perfectly delivered. You can see that the movie is vehemently anti-hate based on this trailer alone. Obviously it will not condone Nazis or Adolf Hitler. It will make them humans, yes, but they sadly were. I can understand people feeling discomfort at any sort of humor related to Nazis and Hitler. It sometimes feels wrong to laugh at anything within fifty yards of World War II. But Jojo Rabbit is not laughing WITH Nazis, it’s laughing AT them.

The hatred of Nazis will not be minimized but it will be satirized. Sometimes comedy is the best weapon, it enables people to make fun of something as terrible and cruel as racism, bigotry and pure evil. Things lose a lot of power when you can laugh at them. They become small and silly.

But it looks like Jojo Rabbit won’t be just laughs. There is a lot of heart on display in this trailer. Just seeing young boy, Roman Griffin Davis, grow close to his hidden Jewish house guest (Thomasin McKenzie) is so touching and sad. It’s heartbreaking to see two innocent children surrounded by such wicked people. But it’s also heartwarming to see the young boy resist his country’s call to embrace hate. I just know this movie will make many people emotional. And it’ll make many people laugh too.

Oh, and as a Jew I can confirm that we CAN read others’ minds.

Jojo Rabbit is going to premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest before opening in theaters October 18th. I’m hoping that the film will avoid controversy and instead its message of love over hate will be easily recognized but given the times we live in I wouldn’t count on it.
