On this episode of Frame Work, Al and I take on a thought experiment: what if the Academy Awards, instead of being biased against the Comedy genre, were biased towards it? Instead of rewarding respectful biopics, Holocaust dramas and the magic of Hollywood, what if the surest way to Oscar gold was playing Lorne Michaels as a supervillain, or delivering the most easily imitated catchphrase? Who would be the Meryl Streep of this world? And who’d still be left off the shortlist? And would the Academy still do that thing where they give the Oscar to someone for the wrong movie, to make up for passing them over earlier for what ended up being their most iconic role? We got deep into our alternate history here, and may well end up revisiting this idea down the line, with any of the other genres the Academy is also hugely biased against.
