TROUBLE CITY

The “Surprise” ‘Breaking Bad’ Movie has A Title and Release Date

Brandon MarcusComment

After months of speculation and rumors, the Breaking Bad film has been officially announced. It’s called El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie and will be released on Netflix on October 11th. With his news we also have a teaser trailer (below), a poster (below the below) and also my opinions (Below the below the below)

That’s a damn fine teaser trailer, featuring fan favorite Skinny Pete who gives us enough hints to fill in the blanks: Jesse Pinkman is on the run after his escape from skinhead meth dealers and the authorities want him. But, like the good friend he is, Pete isn’t giving him up. The film is supposedly about Pinkman’s run from the law and his stride to make a new life for himself in a post-Walter White world. But as we all know, trouble always follows Jesse Pinkman.

El Camino is written and directed by Vince Gilligan, which is fantastic news. It’ll star Aaron Paul, of course, but there is no mention of Bryan Cranston at all in the press materials from Netflix so obviously Walter White is still dead and gone. However, I wouldn’t be too surprised if his “force ghost” appears in the film, either encouraging or antagonizing Jesse and his race to freedom. Also don’t be flabbergasted when you see other Breaking Bad characters pop up. I don’t think Skinny Pete will be the only Albuquerque resident returning.

Speaking of surprises, I wish this whole thing was a true surprise. While I’m totally down for El Camino and actually have a lot of faith in the project, I wish this trailer was delivered as a complete shock. We have known for months that some sort of Breaking Bad film was being made, because of news stories (sorry) and cast members blabbing (darn it, Bob Odenkirk!). That doesn’t mean this movie won’t be stellar, it likely will be. But imagine if this announcement and trailer were completely out of the blue (meth). That would have been quite the welcome surprise, no?

Regardless, El Camino is going to be one to watch. I was quite happy with Jesse Pinkman’s ambitious ending at the conclusion of the series but there is no way I say no to more Breaking Bad goodness from Vince Gilligan himself.

El Camino will stream on Netflix starting October 11th and then will begin airing on AMC months after.
