Trailer: ‘A Quiet Place: Part II’ Brings More Hushed Horror

John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place: Part II is hitting theaters next month which means that Paramount is starting the film’s promotional push in earnest. They’ve got good reason to do so, the first film was a surprise smash, a horror film that felt both original and classic and also brought in boatloads of money. Paramount has high, high hopes for Part II.

The sequel has a few serious challenges to tackle. Firstly, how does it build upon the film’s universe when one of the things that made the first movie work so well was its limited scope and setting? Secondly, how does a sequel which will naturally be bigger remain silent? How do you introduce new characters and new locations when there can’t be much exposition? The biggest challenge to Krasinski’s film will be about retaining the magic from the first movie. A Quiet Place was such a clever concept, so excellently executed. Will lightning strike twice?

It’s hard to tell and this new trailer (above) does little to address any of those challenges and concerns. The preview smartly doesn’t show much, it’s really no more than a short teaser. But what we do see looks great: Emily Blunt with her trusty shotgun, Cillian Murphy in the midst of the world’s worst family panic, a massive alien beast leaping onto the roof of a racing car — there’s a lot of cool stuff here. It looks like Krasinski had a blast returning to the series.

A lot of questions remain about A Quiet Place: Part II. It’s unlikely that the film will live up to the heights of its predecessor. But you never know, maybe it’ll surpass all expectations. No one thought the first A Quiet Place would be as good or successful as it was so perhaps its follow-up will surprise as well.

A Quiet Place: Part II opens March 20th.
