Variety released a report about the issues multiple productions are facing because of the COVID-19 outbreak. The news is pretty disheartening: it seems likely that many movie release dates are going to be delayed, including those for The BatmanThe Matrix 4 and more. The bottom line is that the uncertainty felt around the world is also being felt in Hollywood in a big, big way.

Buried in the Variety piece is an interesting tidbit: the publication says that George Miller is currently meeting with performers for a Furiosa spin-off. We have known for awhile that Miller is intent on making a Mad Max movie that’s all about the iconic character originated by Charlize Theron in Fury Road and now we know who he’s been talking to: Anya Taylor-Joy.

You know Taylor-Joy because she’s had a terrific few years. The actress appeared in The WitchSplit and Glass as well as Emma and the (hopefully) upcoming The New Mutants. She’s really making a name for herself and has obviously been noticed by Miller. We’re not sure if the filmmaker is eyeing her to play Furiosa herself but we have heard that the movie will be a prequel and Taylor-Joy would be a great fit for the part so it seems likely that she will carry on Theron’s legacy when/if this project gets off the ground.

Miller is hoping to begin production on this Furiosa film in 2021 but everything is in flux right now because of COVID-19. Again, uncertainty reigns. But it’s good to get little piece of good news like this. It’s good to hear of filmmakers creating plans for the future because it reminds us all that someday, hopefully in the not-too-distant future, things will be back to normal.
