‘Greyhound’ Trailer: Tom Hanks Takes A Cruise During WWII

Here’s one that’s been flying under our radar (rimshot)

Greyhound, the World War II drama directed by Aaron Schneider and starring Tom Hanks, has a brand new trailer and it’s pretty damn good. The film takes a premise that feels maybe a bit overdone (an Allied convoy tries to pass through the Atlantic at the height of the war) and somehow makes it feel intense and dramatic. Plus you’ve got Hanks leading the whole thing and anyone who doesn’t want to see Tom Hanks in another war movie should probably get themselves committed. Tom Hanks and WWII go together like ice cream and apple pie. Nothing more American than Hanks remaining vigilant and stoic while getting shot at by Nazis.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about Greyhound is that it was written by Hanks himself. Hanks doesn’t often write screenplays but you know he must have been fired up about this one. The man knows World War II better than some history professors and he also has a keen ability to create characters (even his piss-poor Larry Crowne had some charming people in it). This is obviously a project that Hanks is really passionate about. I’m sure it’ll translate into the script.

Do we really need another WWII thriller? Eh, maybe not. But some of these films have a way of surprising us. We go in expecting just another war action film and sometimes we come out being reminded why there is so much ample drama and tension in these stories. If anyone can give us another fantastic war movie, it’s Hanks.

Greyhound is set to open on June 12.
