Doug Liman is preparing for lift-off.

A few weeks ago it was reported that Tom Cruise, tired of making pussy action movies on Earth, was going to film an adventure film in space. Not on a green screen pretending to be space. Cruise, in collaboration with NASA and Space X, was going to literally fly into outer space to film a movie. The idea was both insane and completely, totally on brand for Cruise. Mr. Cruise’s intensity knows no bounds

Now we know which fortunate director will also be donning a space suit. Doug Liman, the man behind Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow, Go and Swingers will direct the untitled space flick. Deadline says Cruise and Liman came up with the idea together, presumably after downing a bunch of energy drinks and high-fiving each other repeatedly. Extreme!

All kidding aside, this sounds like a wild idea that I kinda love. Who wouldn’t want to see a film partially filmed in space? It’s just such an out-there premise that you’d be crazy to not be drawn in. Cruise and Liman’s participation means that this won’t be some silly, forgettable movie but something that carries the full force that only the Hollywood A-list can bring.

It’ll be awhile before the movie gets off the launching pad, Cruise needs to finish the delayed Mission: Impossible 7 before he can set his eyes to the skies. Plus, this movie will obviously require a lot of work and prep time. Going to space isn’t something you can half-ass.

One final question: how will Cruise find a way to ride a motorcycle in space? Pretty sure a motorcycle scene is required in all of his films these days. It’s written into his contracts I think.
