ABC Says “I Don’t” to Dracula Series ‘The Brides’

Back before the world became a Robin Cook novel, writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was hired to create a pilot for ABC about the brides of Dracula. The Brides, starring Gina Torres, was set to be about a trio of women married Dracula (Goran Višnjić) and the family drama surrounding their unorthodox family.

Well, the pilot was made and ABC has decided to pass on the project. Deadline says the series will not move forward at the network, though it’s expected to be shopped elsewhere. So there is hope…you know, if this show sounded good to you.

Personally, it sounded a bit too Desperate Housewives-y to me but I know that many networks are very hot on Aguirre-Sacasa, who has found great success with Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I’m not saying I don’t want a series about Dracula on TV, I am just saying I’m not sure if this is the series I want.

Deadline also reports that the thirtysomething sequel show, thirtysomething(else) (yes, that was the real title) is also dead at ABC. That choice is far more surprising than the decision about The Brides because ABC was pretty excited for the thirtysomething reboot/remake/whatever. Original series’ creators Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz were involved with the project and they even set up a writers’ room to craft the show. But apparently ABC’s schedule for the fall is pretty crowded if you can believe it. Plus thirtysomething(else) was apparently fairly expensive so ABC gave it the ax. But, like I said, it is being shopped around Hollywood. It may still live on.

The upcoming TV season is going to be very odd thanks to the coronavirus. We can expect to see networks make some difficult and different choices to fill time slots. However, we will not see either The Brides or thirtysomething(else) on ABC.
