Gotham City: a place I’d never want to live in but would love to visit. And now I’ll get my chance.

It has been announced that HBO Max has given a series commitment to a new show from Matt Reeves and Terence Winter that’ll revolve around the world that Reeves is creating with The Batman. That’s right, the world of Batman is headed to the small screen again.

HBO says the show will examine the “anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.” No word on Robert Pattinson or Jeffrey Wright (who plays Commissioner Jim Gordon) appearing on the show, even in a cameo capacity. I would expect brand new characters for this show.

This is definitely a great idea and HBO Max is a terrific home for the project. They’ll devote a lot of time and energy and money into the series and will make this feel like a big-screen affair. Reeves and Winter’s involvement only makes the project more tantalizing. Winter has proven himself time and again with his work on The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. It is obvious that this won’t be some weak, kids gloves version of a Gotham City show but stands the chance to actually have some teeth and grit.

You’ll note that this show will not be going to DC Universe, which more or less confirms what we reported the other day: the future for that streaming service is definitely up in the air. The fact that this is going straight to HBO Max is yet another nail in DC Universe’s coffin. Oh boy.

Between this and The Snyder Cut and The Batman and Michael Keaton returning to play the Caped Crusader, this is one exciting time to be a Batman fan. But isn’t it always?
