J.C. Chandor: not the first name you think of when you think of Spider-Man. Then again, you’re not Sony, are you?
Deadline reports that Sony Pictures is in talks with Chandor, the filmmaker behind Margin Call, Triple Frontier and the excellent A Most Dangerous Year, to direct a Kraven the Hunter movie. For those not in the know, Kraven is a popular Spider-Man villain. He is a big game hunter who looks to take down the biggest trophy on Earth: Spider-Man. Kraven is a flamboyant and major nemesis for Spidey, he is also one of the founding members of the Sinister Six. He has appeared in numerous comics and TV adaptations and Sony has been itching to bring him to the big screen for ages. Here he is, wearing his silly outfit:
Chandor is a super talented guy and you can’t deny that him directing a comic book character movie would be interesting indeed. One hopes that he would be able to bring his adult, dense and character-driven filmmaking approach to a Kraven film but we have to be realists too: Sony would likely want him to make a movie on their terms. Still, it’s a fascinating, promising choice.
Sony has been on a tear lately with their few Spider-Man-related projects. They have Venom: Let There Be Carnage (I can’t believe that’s the film’s title) and Morbius in the works as well as a Madame Web and Jackpot movie being developed. Just yesterday it was announced that Olivia Wilde would direct a movie centered around Spider-Woman. So Sony isn’t messing around, they are trying hard to make their Spidey-verse expand. I would expect to hear of even more Spider-Man spin-offs from Sony soon.
