The Batman is once again filming — COVID be damned! And while its delayed release date means it’ll be some time before we actually see the movie on the big screen, we can still revel in behind-the-scenes set photos.

We don’t usually write about set photos at Trouble City but I am today because 1) Colin Farrell as The Penguin looks absolutely wild and these pictures make that even more clear and 2) the costumes seen here make me think some early rumors about The Batman may in fact be true. Let’s take a look, shall we?

The photos are all courtesy of their respective Twitter users or Just Jared:

Okay, so seriously, that make-up job on Farrell is fantastic. He really does look like a completely different man. I love this approach to The Penguin. He feels very real, like an authentic modern gangster.

Now, about how modern he looks: I am starting to think the rumors of The Batman taking place in the 1990s may be true. As you may remember, there was some talk that Matt Reeves’s film would be set during the 90s. That was never definitively confirmed or denied but, looking at these pictures, I think that may be the case. The fashion choices (specifically Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle) looks very 90s to me. So does Farrell’s leathery-looking coat. Even Robert Pattinson’s soft, fluffy jacket looks like it’s from the 1990s too. Now, I don’t know why The Batman would need to take place in the 90s — and, hell, maybe it doesn’t — but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if this was a Batman movie set 20-25 years ago. Re-watch the trailer, you can’t deny that nothing about what we saw looks or feels modern. A 90s setting seems more and more likely.

Well, it’ll be awhile before we know for sure. The Batman is now set to open on March 4, 2022.
