In this house we respect Wes Craven’s Scream!

The first film in the series was fun, quick, bloody, gory and filled to the brim with wonderful references, tongue-in-cheek nods and even legitimately good scares. And how about that opening scene with Drew Barrymore? Man alive, that was something. Scream was a tight, well-oiled machine of a horror film and anyone who says otherwise isn’t giving the movie the proper respect it deserves.

It’s actually a bit shocking that a Scream remake or reboot hasn’t occurred yet considering the current cinematic climate. But that may soon be changing because Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Spyglass is developing a new Scream film. No word on if it’ll be a sequel, reboot or remake or how it’ll tie into the original series (or TV show spin-off) but hopefully it retains some of the fun and mayhem of the original movies.

BD says that Kevin Williamson, screenwriter who co-created the movies with Wes Craven, is not involved with this new movie which is a damn shame. Hopefully Spyglass has intentions to bring back at least some of the cast. Recent horror projects like Halloween have heavily leaned into the idea of bringing back original cast members and picking up where things left off and I hope that’s the plan with this new Scream too. How great would it be to see Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and the rest of the cast return to take on Ghostface one more time? It worked well for Jamie Lee Curtis!

No matter who comes back it is very important that this new Scream doesn’t ignore or butcher what made the original so special. The first movie was satirical and smart while still packing plenty of punch. It took a look at the horror genre and made light of so much while still celebrating it. Yes, it had characters doing stupid things and had silly scares and followed many horror movie tropes but it was so much smarter than the rest of the genre at the time. Hopefully whoever handles this new Scream remembers that and attempts to replicate that magic.
